Rajasthan Winter Trip in 2026: A Road Route From Gujarat That Actually Works
Oct 09 2026
Winter is when Rajasthan finally behaves. The heat that ruins April to June is gone. Palaces, forts and lakes feel like places you can walk around instead of rush through.
The catch? Everybody knows this. October to March is peak season, and the distances are long. A Rajasthan winter trip from Gujarat goes wrong when people plan five cities in five days without checking a single drive time.
So here's the plan, with real numbers. Distances, drive times and starting fares come from the current route pages on our site. You get one six day route, three shorter versions, and the booking mistakes worth skipping in 2026.
Why a Rajasthan Winter Trip Works Best by Road From Gujarat
Trains get you between big cities. They don't get you to Shamlaji at 9 AM, or let you stop at Ajmer for forty minutes, or carry four bags of woollens without a fight on the platform.
A private cab fixes all of that. You pick the departure time. You stop where you want. The same driver stays with you across the whole loop, so nobody re-explains the plan in every new city.
Some people still prefer a self-drive for this kind of trip. Fair. But 1,300 km of highway legs is a lot of steering, and Rajasthan's hill curves near Udaipur are not where you want to be tired. If you're still comparing the two, our full list of Our Cab Routes shows every Rajasthan city we cover, including the stretches between them.
When to Go: What October to March Actually Gives You
Our route pages for Udaipur, Jodhpur and Chittorgarh all say the same thing. October to March is the best window. April to June is extremely hot.
Inside that window, the months feel different. October and early November are mild. December and January are the coldest, with chilly mornings and cold nights, especially at higher spots like Mount Abu. February and March warm up again and the crowds thin a little.
Two winter quirks to plan around. Early mornings can be foggy on some highway stretches, so a slightly later start on long days is smart. And daylight ends early, so a 10 hour leg that begins at noon finishes in the dark. Not ideal.
Rajasthan Winter Trip Distances From Ahmedabad
This is the table most itineraries skip. Every figure below is the one-way distance, drive time and starting fare from our current route pages. Treat the fare as a starting point and confirm the exact number when you book.
| Stop | Distance from Ahmedabad | Drive time | Sedan from | Ertiga from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mount Abu | 228 km | 4 h 57 min | ₹4,104 | ₹5,016 |
| Udaipur | 258 km | 4 h 25 min | ₹3,200 | ₹4,200 |
| Nathdwara | 308 km | 5 h 9 min | ₹5,544 | ₹6,776 |
| Chittorgarh | 365 km | 6 h 4 min | ₹6,570 | ₹8,030 |
| Jodhpur | 443 km | 7 h 57 min | ₹7,974 | ₹9,746 |
| Jaipur | 655 km | 10 h 46 min | ₹9,500 | ₹12,500 |
Look at the Jaipur row again. Nearly eleven hours. That one number is why a three day Rajasthan trip including Jaipur never works well from Gujarat.
Direct answer: how many days do you need for a Rajasthan winter trip from Ahmedabad?
Four days covers Udaipur plus one add-on like Nathdwara or Kumbhalgarh. Six days adds Jaipur. The Ahmedabad to Jaipur leg alone is 655 km, about 10 hours 46 minutes, so anything under five days turns Jaipur into a rushed stop.
A Six Day Rajasthan Winter Trip Route
This is the classic loop. Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jaipur, back home. About 1,306 km of highway in total, built from three legs: 258 km, 393 km and 655 km.
Day 1: Ahmedabad to Udaipur
The Ahmedabad to Udaipur taxi runs on NH48, about 258 km and 4 hours 25 minutes on the booking page. The route page suggests leaving between 6 and 8 AM to beat city traffic and reach Udaipur around noon.
Stops that work. Himmatnagar at 75 km for the first tea. Shamlaji Temple at 110 km, where a 30 minute darshan fits easily. Dungarpur at 195 km for lunch. Carry some cash too, because the NH48 stretch has three to four toll plazas.
Day 2: Udaipur on foot and by boat
Keep this day for the city itself. City Palace takes around three hours if you do it properly. Lake Pichola and Jag Mandir boat rides are best in the evening. Fateh Sagar is nicest in the morning or just before sunset. Saheliyon ki Bari needs about 45 minutes. Bagore ki Haveli suits an evening, and Shilpgram, a craft village, sits about 3 km from the centre.
A car on standby saves a lot of auto haggling between these. The Udaipur local cab service page covers the hourly packages for a day like this.
Day 3: One day trip, not three
Pick one. Nathdwara is 50 km from Udaipur and Eklingji is another 22 km beyond it. Kumbhalgarh Fort is 85 km away and Ranakpur's Jain temple is 95 km away. Chittorgarh is 115 km out.
Most people try to squeeze two. Don't. Nathdwara plus Eklingji is a full day by itself, and Kumbhalgarh plus Ranakpur is another.
Day 4: Udaipur to Jaipur
Now the long one. The Udaipur to Jaipur taxi covers 393 km in about 6 hours 36 minutes. Ajmer sits right on the route, roughly 250 km from Udaipur, and a 30 to 45 minute stop at Ajmer Sharif Dargah barely changes the day.
Leave early. In December, a late start means arriving in Jaipur after dark.
Day 5: Jaipur, slowly
One full day for forts, markets and food. Our Jaipur route page says drivers know the main shopping areas and will wait while you explore. That alone is worth knowing if you're carrying bags between shops.
Day 6: Jaipur back to Ahmedabad
The Jaipur to Ahmedabad taxi runs the same road home, about 655 km and close to eleven hours. Honestly, that's a heavy last day. If the family is tired, break it with a night near Ajmer. Ajmer is on the route, and a one hour stopover can turn into an overnight easily.
Shorter Rajasthan Winter Trip Versions
No six days? Fine. Three versions that hold up.
The four day Mewar loop
Ahmedabad to Udaipur on day one. Full Udaipur day on day two. One add-on day, either Nathdwara with Eklingji or Kumbhalgarh with Ranakpur. Drive home on day four. Total road time is the 258 km Udaipur leg twice, which keeps every day under five hours of driving.
The Mount Abu add-on
Mount Abu is 228 km from Ahmedabad, about 4 hours 57 minutes, and it is 165 km from Udaipur. That makes it a natural stop either on the way out or the way back. The Mount Abu taxi from Ahmedabad page lists a hill-road specialist driver, which matters on winter evenings when the ghat road gets cold and misty. Nakki Lake and the Dilwara temples are the usual highlights.
The Jodhpur desert variant
Want the Thar side of Rajasthan instead? The Ahmedabad to Jodhpur taxi runs 443 km on NH68 in about 7 hours 57 minutes. Jaisalmer is another 280 km beyond Jodhpur. If you also want Mount Abu on the way, the route page says it adds roughly 2 to 3 hours.
Nathdwara and Chittorgarh: Which Add-On Fits Your Group
Nathdwara suits families and anyone travelling for darshan. Mangala aarti is at 5:15 AM and Shringar at 6:45 AM, so an overnight stay beats a rushed same-day trip. Cameras and mobile phones are not allowed in the main darshan area, and a cloakroom is available. Weekday mornings are calmer than weekends.
Chittorgarh suits history people. The fort is huge and a rushed hour does it no favours. Entry is ₹40 for Indian visitors and ₹600 for foreign tourists, with vehicle entry charged separately, and the steep sections mean wheelchair access is only partial. Our write-up on the Chittorgarh Fort visit covers how much time to give it.
One Way Legs or a Round Trip Cab for the Whole Loop?
Short answer: a loop that returns to Ahmedabad is almost always cheaper and calmer as one round trip. The same car and driver stay with you, there's no hunting for a fresh cab in a new city, and luggage stays in one boot.
| Factor | Separate one way legs | One round trip cab |
|---|---|---|
| Same driver all trip | No, new booking each leg | Yes |
| Local sightseeing days | Needs extra local bookings | Car stays with you |
| Luggage handling | Unload and reload each leg | Stays in the boot |
| Plan changes mid-trip | Rebook each leg | Driver adjusts with you |
| Best for | Ending in another city, flying home | Loops that return to Ahmedabad |
One way still wins if you plan to end in Jaipur and fly onward. For everyone else, the round trip taxi service page explains how a multi-day booking works. Udaipur's page also notes that a multi-day cab covering Nathdwara, Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur beats booking separate excursions.
Which Vehicle for Winter Luggage?
Woollens are bulky. A jacket, a shawl, a pair of boots per person eats boot space fast.
On our current fleet, a Dzire seats 4 and carries 3 bags. An Ertiga seats 6 and carries 4 to 5 bags. An Innova Crysta seats 7 and carries 5. Four adults with winter clothes for six days? Take the Ertiga. The Dzire is fine for two or three people travelling light, and it keeps the cost down.
Winter Road Tips Worth Following
- Leave Ahmedabad between 6 and 8 AM for the Udaipur leg, as the route page suggests.
- Ask your driver about fog before any pre-dawn departure, especially in December and January.
- Finish long legs before dark where you can. Short winter days shrink your buffer.
- Carry cash for toll plazas on NH48.
- Bring motion sickness tablets. The Dungarpur to Udaipur stretch has curves and hills.
- Pack a light blanket or shawl in the car. Cold seats at 7 AM are a real thing.
Booking Terms for a Multi-Day Winter Trip
Winter is peak season, so booking early matters more than usual. Our Udaipur page recommends reserving at least a day ahead in October to March and around long weekends. For a six day loop, weeks ahead is safer.
- Bookings open up to 180 days ahead and close 3 hours before pickup.
- A car is allotted at least 8 hours before a standard trip, or 2 hours before an outstation one way trip.
- Pickup date or time changes are free up to 24 hours before pickup, subject to availability.
- Cancelling more than 24 hours ahead gets a 75% refund. Between 24 and 12 hours there is a 40% penalty, between 12 and 6 hours it is 50%, and inside 6 hours the booking is forfeited.
One more thing. Route pages differ slightly on what the fare includes. Some say fuel and driver allowance are included with tolls at actual cost, others bundle toll in too. Ask for it in writing before you pay the advance. The full terms sit on the cancellation and booking policy page.
