Diwali 2026 Trip From Ahmedabad: Where to Go and When to Book the Cab
Oct 12 2026
Diwali comes late this year. Sunday, 8 November. That's about three weeks later than last year, because 2026 has an extra lunar month.
Late sounds harmless. It isn't. The cold season has started, Rann Utsav is already open, Gir has reopened, and half of Gujarat has the same plan. Same week. Same highways. Same sold-out tents.
So a Diwali trip from Ahmedabad is less about where to go and more about when you lock things in. This post gives you the dates, real drive times from our route pages, four trip plans, and a booking timeline built around today's date. Today is 12 October. Diwali is 27 days away.
Diwali 2026 Dates: What Falls When
Gujarat's Diwali is a six day season that ends with the new year. Here's the calendar as it stands in 2026.
| Day | Date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | 6 November | Dhanteras |
| Saturday | 7 November | Kali Chaudas (Choti Diwali) |
| Sunday | 8 November | Diwali, Lakshmi Puja |
| Monday | 9 November | Govardhan Puja and Annakut |
| Mon or Tue | 9 or 10 November | Gujarati New Year, Bestu Varas |
| Tue or Wed | 10 or 11 November | Bhai Beej |
| Saturday | 14 November | Labh Pancham, many businesses reopen |
Two rows have a "or" in them. Honestly, published calendars disagree by a day on the new year and Bhai Beej. Check your family panchang before you fix the return date.
Direct answer: when is Diwali 2026 in Gujarat?
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Dhanteras is Friday, 6 November. The Gujarati New Year follows on 9 or 10 November, depending on the panchang you follow. Labh Pancham is Saturday, 14 November, when many businesses reopen.
Why Most Diwali Trips From Ahmedabad Go Wrong
Three things. Always the same three.
Everyone books the same week. Rann Utsav's own season listing marks 8 to 14 November as a high demand week for tents and transfers. Cabs follow the same pattern. Some people book Diwali travel months out. Others decide on Dhanteras morning. Guess who ends up with the leftover vehicle.
Temples and towns are packed. Our Nathdwara page says weekends and festival days get crowded, and weekday mornings are calmer. Our Udaipur page lists October to March as peak season and recommends reserving at least a day ahead, more around long weekends.
Nobody plans the drive back. Everyone plans the arrival. The return is where the trip quietly goes bad. More on that further down.
Diwali Trip From Ahmedabad: Distances and Starting Fares
Here's the table that settles most arguments in the family group chat. Every figure is a one-way distance, drive time and starting fare from our current route pages. Confirm the exact fare when you book.
| Destination | Distance | Drive time | Sedan from | Ertiga from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mount Abu | 228 km | 4 h 57 min | ₹4,104 | ₹5,016 |
| Udaipur | 258 km | 4 h 25 min | ₹3,200 | ₹4,200 |
| Nathdwara | 308 km | 5 h 9 min | ₹5,544 | ₹6,776 |
| Junagadh (for Gir) | 322 km | 6 h 6 min | ₹4,500 | ₹5,500 |
| Bhuj (for the Rann) | 334 km | 6 h 36 min | ₹4,500 | ₹5,500 |
| Diu | 359 km | 6 h 4 min | ₹6,462 | ₹7,898 |
| Somnath | 424 km | 6 h 57 min | ₹6,500 | ₹7,500 |
| Dwarka | 455 km | 7 h 53 min | ₹6,500 | ₹7,500 |
Look at the drive times. Only two places are under five hours. Everything else is a proper day on the road.
Direct answer: which Diwali trip from Ahmedabad works best for three days?
Udaipur or Mount Abu. Both are under five hours each way, so you spend two full days at the destination. Diu, Kutch and the Saurashtra temples all have drives above six hours, which makes them four to six day trips, not long weekends.
Pick Your Diwali Trip by Days and Group
| Trip | Days | Best for | Long leg | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Udaipur | 3 | Families, couples | 258 km | Peak season rooms |
| Mount Abu and Udaipur | 4 | Cool weather lovers | 228 km | Cold evenings |
| Diu | 4 | Beach and relaxed pace | 359 km | Long drive with kids |
| Kutch and Rann Utsav | 4 | Friends, photographers | 334 km | Diwali week sell-outs |
| Gir, Somnath, Dwarka | 6 | Pilgrims, wildlife fans | 455 km | Safari permits |
Only two nights free? Skip the table and look at our list of weekend getaways under 300 km. Shorter drives, less stress, and nobody sits in the car for a whole day of the break.
Diwali Trip Route 1: Udaipur in 3 Days
This is the easiest one. The Ahmedabad to Udaipur taxi runs on NH48, 258 km, about 4 hours 25 minutes on the booking page. The route page suggests leaving between 6 and 8 AM, which puts you in Udaipur around noon.
Day one is the drive and a slow evening. Day two is the city. City Palace takes around three hours if you do it properly. Evening boat rides on Lake Pichola are the highlight. Fateh Sagar is best in the morning or just before sunset, and Saheliyon ki Bari needs about 45 minutes. Day three is the drive home, ideally before lunch.
Want more? Mount Abu is 165 km from Udaipur, so it fits as a cooler fourth day. Nathdwara is 50 km away. Pick one extra, not both.
Diwali Trip Route 2: Diu in 4 Days
Diu is the "switch off completely" option. Beaches, an old fort, quiet lanes. The Ahmedabad to Diu taxi covers 359 km in about 6 hours 4 minutes, via NH51 through Rajkot and Somnath.
Four days is the honest minimum. One day lost each way, two real days at the beach. Squeeze it into a long weekend and you'll spend more hours in the car than on the sand.
Somnath sits right on the way. A darshan stop turns the long first day into something with a purpose. Just remember Somnath is also crowded in festival week, so keep the stop short and the timing early.
Diwali Trip Route 3: Kutch and Rann Utsav in 4 Days
Rann Utsav 2026-27 runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027 at Dhordo. That means it's open during Diwali week, and it's busy during Diwali week. The festival listing flags 8 to 14 November as a high demand window.
The Ahmedabad to Bhuj taxi is 334 km, about 6 hours 36 minutes. Dhordo is another 80 km from Bhuj. Our Bhuj page recommends booking the cab 7 to 10 days ahead in the November to February season, and says an SUV handles the approach roads better than a sedan.
Two small things trip people up. Mobile network is patchy near the Rann, so download maps before you leave. And White Rann entry needs a permit from the official Gujarat portal, so don't assume you can just walk in.
Skipping Diwali week? The next full moon window is 23 to 25 November, and it fills up fast too. If you want the month by month picture, our post on the best time to visit the Rann of Kutch covers it.
Diwali Trip Route 4: Gir, Somnath and Dwarka in 6 Days
This is the long pilgrimage loop. Junagadh at 322 km, Somnath at 424 km, Dwarka at 455 km. The park at Gir reopened on 16 October after the monsoon closure, and Gir is 65 km from Junagadh.
Safari permits are the catch. They're booked online through the forest department portal. One e-permit covers up to six people plus one child, and the guide and the safari vehicle are paid separately. Our Somnath page says to book at least two weeks ahead, especially around weekends and holidays. For a trip starting around Diwali, that means this month. Our post on Gir lion safari planning walks through the zones and timings.
Your Diwali Booking Timeline
This part is my advice, built on the rules above. Treat the dates as a working plan, not a law.
| By when | What to lock | Why |
|---|---|---|
| This week, around 15 October | Destination, trip days, rough dates | Everything else depends on this |
| By about 20 October | Cab for the outward and return dates | Diwali week gets crowded, vehicle choice shrinks |
| By about 25 October | Gir safari permit, Rann stay and permit | Two weeks ahead is the site's own advice for Gir |
| By about 4 November | Final check on timings and pickup point | Free changes end 24 hours before pickup |
Our system technically lets you book up to 180 days ahead and as late as 3 hours before pickup. That's the rule. The reality in festival week is different. If the vehicle size matters, don't test the 3 hour limit. There's a longer comparison of this trade-off in advance vs last-minute cab booking.
The Return Day Is the Real Trip
Everyone plans the outward leg with care. The return is where the temper goes.
The last day of a festival break is the same day thousands of other families drive home. Highways slow down. Fuel stops get busy. And Labh Pancham on Saturday, 14 November sends many business owners back to work, so the weekend around it carries extra traffic.
Three habits help. Leave early in the morning, not after a long lunch. Keep the longest drive away from the final evening if you can. And add an hour to whatever the booking page says. For a 7 hour leg, plan for 8. Nobody has ever regretted a spare hour.
Diwali Luggage and the Right Vehicle
Diwali trips carry more than normal trips. Gifts. Sweets. Spare clothes for the cold evenings. Maybe a few extra relatives.
Our fleet shows what fits. A Dzire seats 4 and carries 3 bags. An Ertiga seats 6 and carries 4 to 5. A family of five with gifts needs the Ertiga, and the Ertiga cab in Ahmedabad page has the details. One more thing. Skip carrying firecrackers in the car. It's unsafe, and no driver should be asked to take that risk.
Round Trip or One Way for a Diwali Break
Most festival trips end where they started, so a round trip usually fits. The same car and driver stay with you, your luggage stays in one boot, and there's no scramble for a fresh cab in a crowded town. The round trip taxi in Ahmedabad page explains how multi-day bookings work.
One way makes sense only if you finish somewhere else, say you're flying onward from another city. Otherwise, round trip. That's it.
Booking Terms for a Festival Trip
- Bookings open up to 180 days ahead and close 3 hours before pickup.
- A car is allotted at least 8 hours before a standard trip, or 2 hours before an outstation one way trip.
- Pickup date or time changes are free up to 24 hours before pickup, subject to availability.
- Cancelling more than 24 hours ahead gets a 75% refund. Between 24 and 12 hours there is a 40% penalty, between 12 and 6 hours it is 50%, and inside 6 hours the booking is forfeited.
Routes differ a little in what the fare includes, so ask for the toll, state permit and night allowance details in writing before you pay the advance. Full terms sit on the cancellation and booking policy page.
