Gujarat Winter Trip in 2026: Kutch, Gir, Somnath and Dwarka by Road

Gujarat has two completely different winter trips hiding inside one state. One is white salt desert, moonlit tents and Kutch handicrafts. The other is lions, Shiva temples and a coastline that runs all the way to Krishna's city.

People try to do both in one long weekend. Bad idea. The distances don't allow it, and you spend the whole trip staring at a highway.

So this Gujarat winter trip plan keeps them apart. You get real distances, drive times and starting fares from our route pages, a three day Kutch route, a six day Saurashtra route, and the booking details that decide whether your trip works in 2026.

Why Winter Is the Right Season for a Gujarat Winter Trip

Our route pages agree on the season, and the windows overlap nicely. Dwarka is best from October to March. Somnath is best from October to February. Bhuj and the White Rann peak from November to February, which is also Rann Utsav time. Gir's safari season is busiest from December to March.

Monsoon is the opposite story. The Dwarka page warns about heavy rain and high seas from July to September, and the Somnath page says the same about coastal rain. Winter skips all of that.

The flip side? Everyone else has read the same pages. Winter is peak season, so safari slots, Rann Utsav stays and cab availability all tighten up. More on that below.

Gujarat Winter Trip Distances From Ahmedabad

This is the table that saves arguments in the car. Every figure is a one-way distance, drive time and starting fare from our current route pages. Confirm the exact fare when you book.

Destination Distance from Ahmedabad Drive time Sedan from Ertiga from
Junagadh (Girnar) 322 km 6 h 6 min ₹4,500 ₹5,500
Bhuj (Kutch) 334 km 6 h 36 min ₹4,500 ₹5,500
Somnath 424 km 6 h 57 min ₹6,500 ₹7,500
Dwarka 455 km 7 h 53 min ₹6,500 ₹7,500

Nothing here is a short drive. Even the nearest stop is over six hours. That's why every day in the plans below is built around one long leg, not two.

Direct answer: how many days do you need for a Gujarat winter trip by road?

Three days works for Kutch and the White Rann. Six days works for Junagadh, Gir, Somnath and Dwarka. The shortest leg from Ahmedabad is 322 km, so squeezing both regions into one trip leaves almost no time at any destination.

Which Gujarat Winter Trip Fits You

Trip Days Best for Main long leg
Kutch and White Rann 3 Photography, culture, Rann Utsav, couples and friends Ahmedabad to Bhuj, 334 km
Girnar, Gir, Somnath, Dwarka 6 Families, pilgrims, wildlife lovers Dwarka to Ahmedabad, 455 km
Somnath and Dwarka only 3 Pilgrimage without wildlife Ahmedabad to Dwarka, 455 km

Pick based on the people in the car. Elderly parents usually want the pilgrimage version. Friends with cameras want Kutch. Kids tend to remember the lions.

Gujarat Winter Trip Route 1: Kutch and the White Rann in 3 Days

Day 1: Ahmedabad to Bhuj

The Ahmedabad to Bhuj taxi covers 334 km in about 6 hours 36 minutes on the booking page. The route page says to plan one or two rest breaks, and lists decent meal stops at Viramgam, Halvad and Samakhiali.

Leave early. You want to reach Bhuj with daylight left and still have energy for dinner.

Day 2: White Rann at Dhordo

Dhordo, the White Rann, is 80 km from Bhuj. You can do it as a day trip from Bhuj, and plenty of travellers stay in the Dhordo tent city during Rann Utsav for the full moon experience.

Two things catch people off guard. Winters here are properly cold, so carry warm clothes along with sunglasses, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. And mobile network is limited in remote Rann areas. Our route page says BSNL tends to work better than private operators there, so don't rely on live maps.

Day 3: Mandvi or straight home

Mandvi beach and Kutch's handicraft villages are the usual extras. Tell us at booking if you want them, since our Kutch packages can run two to five days. Otherwise it's the 334 km drive back.

A car on standby in town saves a lot of haggling. The Bhuj local cab service page covers the hourly packages for getting around Bhuj itself. For the wider Rann picture, including what's new this year, our Rann of Kutch 2026 post goes deeper.

Gujarat Winter Trip Route 2: Girnar, Gir, Somnath and Dwarka in 6 Days

This is the big Saurashtra loop. Ahmedabad, Junagadh, Gir, Somnath, Dwarka, home. The legs add up to roughly 1,130 km: 322 km to Junagadh, 105 km on to Somnath, about 250 km across to Dwarka, and 455 km back to Ahmedabad.

Day 1: Ahmedabad to Junagadh

The Ahmedabad to Junagadh taxi runs 322 km in about 6 hours 6 minutes. Rajkot sits at the 215 km mark, which makes it a natural lunch stop.

Evening can go to Uparkot Fort, a 2,000 year old fort with rock-cut Buddhist caves and old stepwells, or to Mahabat Maqbara, known for its stone carvings and silver doors.

Day 2: Girnar and Gir

Girnar is about 10,000 steps, and yes, that's as tiring as it sounds. A ropeway now makes the hilltop temples easier for anyone who'd rather not climb. Do it early in the morning.

Gir is 65 km from Junagadh, and the route page says a Gir visit needs an overnight stay. The safari is the part that needs planning. Permits are booked online in advance through the forest department, and December to March is peak. I'll come back to that.

Day 3: Gir or Junagadh to Somnath

Somnath is 105 km from Junagadh and about 65 km from Gir, so this is a relaxed driving day. Timing matters more than distance. Aarti is at 7 AM, 12 noon and 7 PM, and the evening one is the most striking. Aim to reach the temple by 6:30 PM for a good spot.

For the full run from home, the Ahmedabad to Somnath taxi page lists the NH47 stops: Rajkot at 215 km, Junagadh at 320 km, Veraval at 400 km, Somnath at 424 km. Good to know if you ever do Somnath as a standalone trip.

Extras here: Triveni Sangam near the temple, Bhalka Tirth about 5 km away, the beach behind the temple, and the evening sound and light show. Phones and cameras aren't allowed inside, and a free cloakroom is available at the entry point.

Day 4: Somnath to Dwarka

The Somnath to Dwarka taxi covers about 250 km along the coast. Dwarkadhish Temple generally opens in the morning until about 1 PM and reopens around 5 PM for evening aarti, so plan to arrive between sessions and rest first. Check current hours before you go.

Ahmedabad to Dwarka directly is its own trip. The Ahmedabad to Dwarka taxi page lists 455 km and about 7 hours 53 minutes via Rajkot, Jamnagar and Khambhalia.

Day 5: Bet Dwarka, Nageshwar and the beach

Bet Dwarka is about 30 km from Dwarka, reached by a short ferry from Okha, roughly 15 minutes each way. Plan about two and a half hours in total. The last ferry time varies, so be at Okha before 4 PM.

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is 17 km from Dwarka on the way to Okha. Rukmini Devi Temple is about 2 km from the main temple. Gomti Ghat and Sudama Setu look best at sunrise or sunset, and Shivrajpur Beach, a Blue Flag beach, is 12 km away.

Day 6: Dwarka back to Ahmedabad

The Dwarka to Ahmedabad taxi is the long finish: roughly 455 km, close to eight hours. Leave by early morning and you reach home before the late evening traffic builds up.

Book Gir Safari and Rann Utsav Early

This is where good plans quietly fall apart. Not the cab. The permits and the stays.

  • Gir safari: slots are booked online through the forest department. Our Somnath page says book at least two weeks ahead, especially on weekends and holidays.
  • Rann Utsav season: our Bhuj page recommends booking the cab 7 to 10 days ahead for November to February.
  • Tent stays at Dhordo: they exist, but they fill up in the same window.

Sort the permits and stays first. Then lock the cab around them.

One Way, Round Trip or a Pilgrimage Package?

Option Works when Watch out for
One way cab You return by train or flight, or end in another city No car waiting at the destination
Round trip cab You return to Ahmedabad and want the same driver throughout Plan sightseeing days so the driver's overnight is covered
Somnath and Dwarka package Three days, two dhams, one booking Ask for the combined quote and share the full itinerary

For a loop that finishes where it started, the round trip taxi service page explains the multi-day structure. Both our Somnath and Dwarka pages mention a three day combined package, so mention it when you call.

Which Vehicle for a Gujarat Winter Trip?

It depends on the road. Our Bhuj page recommends SUVs for Kutch because they handle the approach roads to the White Rann better than sedans. Our Dwarka page recommends the Innova Crysta for the 8 hour run, with a starting fare of ₹11,500 against ₹6,500 for a Sedan.

Winter clothes are bulky, so luggage matters too. A Dzire seats 4 with 3 bags, an Ertiga seats 6 with 4 to 5 bags, and an Innova Crysta seats 7 with 5 bags. For a family of four doing the Saurashtra loop, the Ertiga is the sensible middle.

Winter Road Tips for Saurashtra and Kutch

  • Start at 5 or 6 AM for Somnath and Dwarka. It beats Rajkot's city traffic and gets you in before the afternoon break.
  • Keep a light shawl handy near Somnath. The sea breeze is nice until a sudden gust throws sand around.
  • Download offline maps before Kutch. Mobile network is patchy in the Rann.
  • Pack warm layers for Rann evenings, even if the afternoon feels mild.
  • Check the Okha ferry cutoff before planning your Bet Dwarka afternoon.
  • Early mornings can be foggy on some stretches in December and January, so ask your driver before a pre-dawn start.

Booking Terms for a Multi-Day Gujarat Trip

  • Bookings open up to 180 days ahead and close 3 hours before pickup.
  • A car is allotted at least 8 hours before a standard trip, or 2 hours before an outstation one way trip.
  • Pickup date or time changes are free up to 24 hours before pickup, subject to availability.
  • Cancelling more than 24 hours ahead gets a 75% refund. Between 24 and 12 hours there is a 40% penalty, between 12 and 6 hours it is 50%, and inside 6 hours the booking is forfeited.

One thing to confirm. Route pages describe tolls and state permits slightly differently, and the Somnath page adds a night allowance if you leave at or after 10 PM. Ask for the full inclusion list in writing before you pay the advance. Full terms sit on the cancellation and booking policy page.
